Why Did The Idiot Cross The Road???

Cross at the green, not in between. Look left, then right, then left again.

Here is another classic situation: You get in your car to go someplace, or your driving your car and about to park in a space, either on the street or in a parking lot; you're the only car moving in the area; some idiot(s) decide to walk behind your car while it's moving despite the fact that they had any number of places to cross the street. What is it about a moving car that attracts some people? Is it a death wish? Do they believe that this could produce a cash settlement for them?

Occasionally, I read the paper and hear about somebody getting hit by a car while crossing the street or walking through a parking lot, and although I feel sorry for them, I still feel compelled to wonder if they might be one of the idiots mentioned above: they decided to cross the street behind the car that was being parked by somebody late for an appointment, or they decided to step out into the street against the light because they believe the "pedestrian has the right of way" rule is like a magic shield against drivers who just don't see them?
