The Maestro

“Music, plays, poems, novels… It’s about telling stories with and without words… melodies, grooves, moods, and occasionally, lyrics.”

MWALIM’s music: is it soul, jazz, funk, house, rock, or hip-hop? The answer is “Yes”. When you point of entrance into the music industry was as a studio session player, your sense of commitment to a single genre tends to be over-shadowed by the chameleon-like, code-switching requirements of your job. When you make the transition from session player to recording artist, and the sudden need to pigeon hole you become essential, along comes the independent music world to set you free. Dubbed the Godfather of Southcoast Thump & Soul, MWALIM is a leading figure in the multi-genre music movement that is swelling from Cape Cod and the Southcoast of Massachusetts to the world. “Some one who’s real is someone who never fronts. Someone who can creatively manifest however he wants, is also considered a man of the renaissance…” - MWALIM from the song “REAL EMCEES” by The ZYG 808

Since 1990, MWALIM has established himself as an artist/composer/producer in Jazz, Soul and Club Music (House, Afrobeat, Acid Jazz)scenes scoring international club hits with “Her Groove” (1990), “Dancing In The Moonlight” (1996) and “Out of the Woods” (2001); as well as winning the New England Urban Music Award for ‘Best Male Jazz Artist’ in 2010, 2012, and 2014. In addition, his tenure as the keyboardist, co-producer, and vocalist for the six-time Grammy nominated soul-funk ensemble, The GroovaLottos. Just prior to helping form The GroovaLottos, Mwalim was providing remixes on various underground club cuts, tapping into his ability to hear songs and music beyond what is presented. Although still actively a part of the ensemble, MWALIM took some time to venture into his other worlds and the result is two mixtapes of material: “Downstreeter’s Suite” (Soul/ Indie/ NuJazz) and “Polymath’s Grotto” (House/ Afrobeat/ NuJazz).

As owner and head of production at Polyphonic Studios, the flow of music from this prolific artist and producer goes way beyond the imagination.
